The bustling Nieuwmarkt neighbourhood is also just around the corner. The A-10 ring road is easily accessible via the IJ tunnel, among others, and soon again via the Piet Hein tunnel. A parking permit can be applied for street parking, which also gives the right to park in the residents' section of the large Oosterdok parking garage (5 minutes on foot).
History:
The building was built by Admiral Michiel de Ruyter, the most famous naval hero in Dutch history. On 24 March 1607, Michiel Adriaenszoon de Ruyter was born in Vlissingen. At an early age, he went to sea. There, he rose from ship's boy to skipper. After a career in whaling, privateering and merchant shipping, he was asked to join the Admiralty of Zeeland. De Ruyter became best known for his role in important naval battles. In battles against Spaniards, French and Englishmen and privateers, he proved to have excellent insight. Because of his successes, he was eventually appointed commander-in-chief of the Dutch fleet. His most famous action is the trip to Chatham in England. In 1676, De Ruyter fell in battle against the French at Syracuse at the age of 69. He is then one of Holland's most famous naval heroes. Often and in many ways, Michiel de Ruyter has been commemorated. From postage stamps to statues, from street names to naval vessels.
Unfortunately, he never got to experience the realisation of the Kalkmarkt.
