Geleen
A setback came in 1965, when the mine closures were announced. The Maurits State Mine, on which Geleen was so dependent, closed as early as 1967. The State Mines' chemical complex, which grew out of coking plants and the nitrogen fixation plant, remained in operation and switched to natural gas as a raw material. Initially it produced mainly fertilizers and plastics, later it also became active in fine chemicals. The fertilizer branch became independent as OCI Agro, SABIC took over the bulk chemicals, while fine chemicals remained in the hands of DSM, the de facto successor to Staatsmijnen. The chemical park became independent under the name Chemelot. This safeguarded part of the employment. To the north, Geleen grew attached to the town of Sittard, separated from it only by the provincial road 276, here functioning as the Sittard bypass. Geleen also encountered the boundaries of the bowl of Munstergeleen to the east, and the A76 and Neerbeek to the south.
