THE BUILDING

After the building was constructed in the 16th century, the house was renovated and expanded in 1747 by order of Adriaan Wittert van Valkenburg, with the addition of a second floor and the beautifully decorated entrance. In 1922, the building became part of the distillery that was already established at number 20. In 1947, the two right-hand ground floor windows were replaced with a gateway to facilitate the transport of wine and cognac stored in the cellar. The cellar still contains seven large wooden wine barrels, which are on display. The distillery has now made way for several studios and apartments and has been granted the status of a national monument.

THE SURROUNDINGS

The Oude Molstraat dates back to the Middle Ages and was once a backstreet through the dunes, intended for craftsmen and low-ranking officials. The street’s winding shape still reflects its origins as a dune path. Today, the Oude Molstraat, together with the Molenstraat, Papestraat, Juffrouw Idastraat, and Annastraat, forms The Hague’s Hofkwartier. This historic neighborhood in the center of The Hague borders the Noordeinde Palace and is known for its exclusive shops, hotels, restaurants, cafés, and studios. Due to the pedestrian-friendly nature of the area, it’s perfect for a leisurely stroll and admiring the monumental buildings.
