The Dutch and their habits

Welcome to the Netherlands! You've probably gathered some information about The Netherlands, but do you know the typical habits of its residents? Learn all about the typical Dutch mentality and what you can expect from your fellow Dutchies! This way, we want to help you make some friends in your new country.

Diversity and tolerance

The Netherlands boasts a diverse mix of inhabitants. Our (originally Argentine) queen once said, "The typical Dutch person doesn't exist." While not everyone agrees, it indicates the incredible diversity in the country. People from all corners of the world have been coming to the Netherlands for years. As a result, you'll find people of different races, languages, religions, and their own customs. This diversity fosters a high level of tolerance among the Dutch. For years, people have been accustomed to living alongside various communities.

Netherlands is also an LGBTQ-friendly country. Especially in the big cities, this is increasingly evident through gay bars and other facilities, the celebration of Pride, and there are a number of monuments/artworks on the streets that represent the community. Did you know, for example, that The Netherlands was the first country to legalize same-sex marriage? At midnight on March 31, 2001, the then mayor of Amsterdam, Job Cohen, married 4 couples.

Doe maar gewoon

When you first encounter a Dutchie, it's good to know that most Dutch people are very down-to-earth. They don't get worked up easily, their reactions are never over the top, and they're very practical-minded. The famous saying "Doe maar normaal, dan doe je al gek genoeg" (Just act normal, that's crazy enough) paints that typical picture of Dutch sobriety. This doesn't mean that Dutch people are never enthusiastic about anything, you'll just hear them a bit less exuberant when they are. So, know that it's not you, but that it's in the DNA of Dutch people to react calmly.

Making friends

It can be challenging to make friends when you've just moved to a new country. Therefore, it's important to integrate into your new environment. Dutch people generally speak good English, but it helps to have a basic knowledge of the Dutch language. Here are a few other tips that can help you make friends (Dutch or otherwise) faster:

  • Be open and approachable: Dutch people are generally friendly and open-minded. So, don't be afraid to take the initiative and start a conversation. You can start with talking about “Koetjes en Kalfjes”, the Dutch acronym for small-talk. Popular topics are the weather, public transport and traffic.
  • Show interest in joined activities: Dutch people attach great importance to ‘gezelligheid’, which roughly translates to cozyness. It means that they like to spend time with other people in cozy settings and have fun. Invite people for a cup of coffee, a drink, or a joint activity.
  • Get involved in sports: Sport is an important part of Dutch culture. Join a local gym, football team, or running group. This not only offers the opportunity to exercise but also to meet new people.
  • Be patient: It may take a while before you make really good friends. Dutch people are generally a bit reserved at first, but once you've gained their trust, they are often loyal and engaged.
  • Join social activities: Look for local events, clubs, or associations that match your interests. Whether it's art, music, cooking, or hiking, there's always something where you can meet like-minded people.
  • Know the Dutch and their habits: in general, when you first meet someone it is common to give them a handshake. Also, this is the appropriate way to greet someone formal or in corporate settings. If you are more acquainted with someone, you can use one or three kisses on the cheek.
  • Dinner time: it’s good to know that most Dutch people tend to have dinner between 5 and 7 pm. So if you want to visit or call, do it before or after these times!
  • Be yourself: The most important thing is to be authentic and true to yourself. Dutch people appreciate sincerity and authenticity in their friendships.
